Sistem ejaan bahasa Melayu telah bermula pada tahun 1904 dan diisytiharkan penggunaannya secara rasmi pada 16 Ogos 1972. Ini adalah hasil kesepakatan bersama Majlis Bahasa Indonesia-Malaysia. Sistem ejaan tersebut adalah seperti berikut:
(i) Huruf vokal: a, e, i, o, u
(ii) Huruf diftong: ai, au, oi
(iii) Huruf konsonan: huruf selain huruf vokal
(iv) Huruf konsonan gabungan: gh, kh, ny, ng, sy
2.1.1 Huruf Vokal
Dalam bahasa Melayu ada enam fonem atau bunyi vokal standard. Huruf-huruf yang melambangkan fonem-fonem tersebut ialah a, e, i, o, u seperti dalam rajah di bawah.
